AOL has launched a free service (still in Beta) that lets users consolidate their personal photos, videos and music that are now scattered across multiple computers and Web sites on a single Web site.
The new site, Bluestring, combines elements of video- sharing sites such as Google Inc's YouTube, online picture sites such as Yahoo Inc's Flickr service and music sites with AOL's online storage division Xdrive.
Users will be granted about 5 GB of memory. Depending on file size, that would be enough storage to hold about 1,600 songs, or up to 10,000 photos, or about 600 videos. For $100 a year you'll get 50GB, and that storage cap will be raised shortly.
The upload is made easy with BlueString. The regular online upload and "AutoCopy". Autocopy is a piece of software that you download on your computer. This tool automatically uploads your files stored in your My Music, My Pictures, and My Videos folders on your PC into BlueString.
The storage back-end for BlueString is XDrive, an online storage and backup service that AOL acquired, and where AOL has clearly been testing BlueString ideas.
If you're a user of AOL Pictures, files from there also automatically load into your workspace. BlueString will also import from Flickr. You can Publish your photos or videos into your own blog or website. The drag and drop feature for sharing your photos is such an ease.
