Technology is getting far better & better everyday. Can you imagine that you can access your computer from anywhere in the world using just your phone? It is possible now. Even if your computer is turned off, you can get hold of your files from your computer with the touch of a button.
I recently came accross this website called SoonR.com, the site gives you such a slick feature for accessing your computer from anywhere using either your phone or any other computer. You can Search files (If you have Google Desktop installed on your computer), view/share documents (PowerPoint, Word docs, etc.), access email clients (Outlook, Mac Mail, etc.), run your Skype client, and lots more right from your mobile or any web-enabled PC.
How does it work?
You need to first register yourself with SoonR.com. Once you are registered, You can download and install a small application on your computer which runs in the background as a service. During the installation, you can specify what folders or computer drives you want to make available for remote access. By default, your "My Document" folder is available for remote access.
Now you can go to any other computer or use your mobile (GPRS enabled) and point your browser to SoonR.com. You will see a login screen where you provide your username and password that you had created in the begining @ SoonR.com. Once you are loogged in, you will see "Desktop" and "Organizer" option as well Google Desktop Search box. Clicking on the Desktop link will give you an access to your "My Documents" folder (also to your drives if you made those available for access).
You can use your Outlook/mac email account to receive/send email messages as well as share your documents with your friends via email. One good thing is that, you can have upto 100MB of your files stored for "Any time" access. So you can keep your important files(upto 100MB of size), and put them in one folder under My Documents and make it available from anywhere even if your computer is turned off.
That is just amazing feature. I have been using SoonR for the last couple of weeks and I am really impressed by the service. Oh and by the way, its totally free. They do have few paid packages where you can do more stuff but I think for normal people like me and you, we are fine with the basic free service.
So give it a try and let me know what do you think of it.
