Imagine you are walking on a street in an unknown city and you are looking for a starbucks coffee... you open up your iPhone and start your camera towards the street and your iPhone shows you the closest coffee shop with the distance and directions... I am not talking about the GPS with Point of interest, I am talking about the Augmented Reality.

Augmented Reality is basically a merger of your physical world and virtual world. You point your iPhone camera towards the street or a building and it displays the information about those places in your phone in real time. You can read more about Augmented Reality in Wikipedia but what I just explained is not only in movies but can be done by you, me or anyone who has an iPhone or Google Android phone.

The Bionic Eye is a new application (click here to go to iTunes App Store) specifically developed for the iPhone 3GS that enables you to visualize Points of Interest (POI) located in your nearby environment in the US, thanks to a unique Augmented Reality functionality using the iPhone camera.

If you are using Android powered mobile phone, you can use Layar, an application that brings Augmented Reality to Android Mobile phones.

If you are interested in developing Augmented Reality for Palm Pre or other smart phones, there are few open source platforms available for that.

• ARToolKit is a Cross-platform Library for the creation of augmented reality applications, developed by Hirokazu Kato in 1999 and was released by the University of Washington HIT Lab. Currently it is maintained as an opensource project hosted on SourceForge with commercial licenses available from ARToolWorks.
• ATOMIC Authoring Tool is a Cross-platform Authoring Tool software, for Augmented Reality Applications, which is a Front end for the ARToolKit library. Was developed for non-programmers, to create small and simple, Augmented Reality applications, released under the GNU GPL License.
