What if the buyers are presented with the facility to get all the mobile OS soft wares under one roof without having to hunt all around? Certainly Microsoft realized this need and has come up with the launching of one stop mobile application market. Job advertisements suggest that Microsoft is preparing to launch in the next few months a Web site called Skymarket to sell Windows Mobile OS applications. This centralized application store to be started by Microsoft basically aims to compete with its competitors Apple and Google providing similar offerings.
More than 15,000 Microsoft mobile applications are currently available in a scattered manner among various vendors like Handango, MobiHand, and Pocket across numerous websites. However with the starting of this centralized application store all the mobile applications by Microsoft can be made accessible under a common platform.
The firm is currently searching for a Product Manager for a service known as Skymarket that would become a key aspect of Windows Mobile 7 and launch at the same time. A recruit would effectively head the entirety of the project and set the business model as well as the pricing and other terms. The advertisement released by Microsoft basically looks similar to Apple’s sale of mobile applications and is supposed to offer a stiff competition to Apple's iTunes store selling iphone applications.
In the ad for the senior product manager, one of the key responsibilities of the position include "definition of the product offering, pricing, business model, and policies that will make Windows Mobile marketplace 'the place to be' for developers wishing to distribute and monetize their Windows Mobile applications." The application store would make it easier to search, review, purchase and download mobile applications particularly windows mobile 7 that will be released in 2009.
Skymarket would also add to Microsoft's growing portfolio of digital stores, which include Windows Marketplace, Zune Marketplace, and Xbox Live Marketplace.
The company doesn't explain when it expects to launch Skymarket, though it notes the service is already in development and that developers will have initial access to the store framework during the fall. And certainly once it gets launched; it’s going to serve millions of demands in mobile applications.
