Television first came to India [named as ‘Doordarshan’ (DD) on Sept 15, 1959 as the National Television Network of India. The first telecast started on Sept 15, 1959 in New Delhi. After a gap of about 13 years, s second television station was established in Mumbai (Maharashtra) in 1972 and by 1975 there were five more television stations at Srinagar (Kashmir), Amritsar (Punjab), Calcutta (West Bengal), Madras (Tamil Nadu) and Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh). For many years the transmission was mainly in black & white.
In 1992, the government liberated its markets, opening them up to cable television. Five new channels belonging to the Hong Kong based STAR TV gave Indians a fresh breath of life. MTV, STAR Plus, BBC, Prime Sports and STAR Chinese Channel were the 5 channels. Zee TV was the first private owned Indian channel to broadcast over cable. A few years later CNN, Discovery Channel, National Geographic Channel made its foray into India. Star expanded its bouquet introducing STAR World, STAR Sports, ESPN and STAR Gold.

BSNL has started a new trend in India. BSNL along with Apalya Technologies Pvt. launched an end to end mobile video solution for providing world class TV through GSM mobile handsets called MiMobi.tv for BSNL EDGE/GPRS customers. The service is launched in Andhra Pradesh and looks like it would roll out to other states soon.
![]() BBC launches its Beta iPlayer, an online service that allows people to download programmes from the last week. Viewers can choose from 400 hours of programmes, between 60 and 70 percent of the total TV output, including hit shows such as "EastEnders, "Doctor Who" and "Planet Earth". This service is free and will allow people in Britain to download these shows on their computers. These computers should have Microsoft XP operating system as a requirement. People won't be able to save these downloaded copies permanently as these clips will be automatically deleted after viewing or after 30 days. (via:CIOL)

The site will broadcast news and policy reports from the government of India. The main focus would be on what PIO (People Of India) would like to know. So what else the site will have? sports, lifestyle, fashion, bollywood shows etc. etc. etc. ![]() I know !! Who wants to watch Door Darshan ? I don't even know how many people watch DoorDarshan now a days. But I appreciate DD's efforts and hope. And now they have launched their few channels on mobile. Wednesday Doordarshan made "Watching TV on Mobile" into reality. This service is currenly available to Delhiites only but soon the service will be available to other parts of the country. This services becoming available on phone sets based on a new technology called Digital Video Broadcast-Hand held (DVB-H).Signals will be available within 12 km of the Akashwani Bhawan which is situated on the Parliament Street in New Delhi.
