Internet users in India reached 37 million in the month of September 2006. During the same period the number of active users rose to 25 million, according to recently released survey reports from the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI-IMRB).

The future estimated projection of Internet users is the following:

  • Sept 2006: 37m ever users and 25m active users
  • March 2007: 42m ever users and 28m active users
  • March 2008: 54m ever users and 43m active users


"Active user" is defined as someone who has used the Iternet at least once in the last 30 days, while "ever user" is someone who has used the Internet at least once.

 

So imagine what would be the future of Indian internet if the broadband connection becomes free in India !!

 

Yes you heard it right, there are plans to make broadband connection free in India.

BSNL Dataone is one of the widely used broadband internet service in India. It has different plans including Home 500, Home 500 C, Home 500 Combo plus etc. If you have one of the above dataone plan, you may have noticed that these plans comes with Night Free (Unlimited plan). So basically whatever you download during 2 AM to 8 AM would not count towards your monthly download limits.

Here is the catch though, DataOne averages the data usage over the sessionand then substracts 6 hours (2AM to 8AM) worth of the download. So for users of free night plan from 2AM to 8AM, they still have to switch off and switch on their modem at 2AM if they want to get really night free from dataone.

Bharti Airtel announced the launch of the ‘Freedom 550’ Plan, which is a fixed line plan with a bundled offer of a ‘free broadband’ connection.

The Freedom 550 plan comes with a "free broadband" internet connection at a speed of upto 512 kbps with a free download limit of 550MB per month.

Customers will also receive free calls value of Rs. 500 per month. This plan will also offer customers to access their bills online, make payments online as well as online customer care support.

BSNL has launched its new fastest broadband connection in India- up to 24 Mbps speed. This comes after Bharti Airtel claimed to be offering the fastest broadband at 16 Mbps speed.

Google is planning to launch next generation broadband network which provides Internet at speed of 100 times faster than most exiting broadband connections in the US.

The company is experimenting in many ways to offer Internet connection at a better and faster rate.

In the beginning the company plans to run a trial test later this year with as many as 500,000 people.

Now this technology is about to get a huge update in speed. The WiGig standard has been finalized and the two organizations behind it, the Wi-Fi Alliance and WiGig Alliance, has published it. WiGig operates at 60 GHz and enables connections of up to 7 Gbps. WiGig will work at 60 GHz, but only over short distances.
